Saturday night – 09/24/11

Oops… I thought one of the regulars, who is allergic to beef, wasn’t going to be joining us this week so i made a brisket as the main dish. Luckily he’s easy going and when he showed up he just said oh well, it does look wonderful. It’s nice to have friends who go with the flow.

Onion-Braised Beef Brisket
Potatoes Dauphinoise (close approximation here, I used the Bourdain recipe).
Sauteed Eggplant with red pepper, fennel and onion.
Braised Greens

Ted’s homemade bread (the first loaf from his new starter)

Notes

We are pretty darn sick of eggplant at this point in the CSA season. Last year we had an over abundance of tomatoes. This year it is eggplants. While we’ve learned how to make a few tasty things with them having the same things, even with variations, gets boring. We’ll surely miss the very fresh light purple ones we have been receiving at some point, probably mid-February. Until then we’ll suffer through. :-)

The brisket was really quite good. I cooked it for 2 hours and it could have used maybe another 20 minutes at the thickest part of the roast. The brisket itself came from Maple Heights Farm via Mass Local Foods (http://masslocalfoods.org/). It came trimmed, rolled and tied into a nice roast. Excellent value.
